Belaying is the process of securing and safeguarding a climber by using a rope to hold the climber's weight if he falls. Learning to belay allows climbers to use all of the top rope stations in the gym providing more climbing opportunities than just the auto belays, bouldering, and Kilter Board. Belaying is an important part of the climbing chain of safety and one of the most important skills that any climber must master.

Intro to Top-Rope is a great option if you are new to climbing or need a refresher on belaying. This is also a great option for family members who would like to belay for each other (The minimum age to learn to belay is 13).

The class will cover topics such as;

  • Equipment use

  • Safety procedures

  • Voice commands

  • Belaying

  • Catching a climbers fall

  • Lowering the climber

  • Tying in to the climbers end

Successful completion of the class allows participants to climb for the remainder of the day using their new skills. On the next visit participants will be tested to confirm that the information has been retained.

Learn the fundamentals of Lead Climbing and start moving towards a more advanced form of climbing! You will learn rope management, belaying a lead climber, how to take and catch a lead fall, and about the equipment particular to Lead Climbing. This class is designed as an introduction to Lead Climbing and is structured to teach you everything you need to pass the Rapp Rocks Lead Climbing Test. This class is great for any climber who has mastered top-rope belaying and is ready to take their climbing to the next level!

Gear and Rentals:

Participants will need a harness, climbing shoes and a belay device for the class. It is recommended to take the class using the belay device you plan to mainly use to lead belay. If participants need any of this equipment, we will provide the required equipment for the class.

Participants may take the Lead Test starting the following day after taking the class. We require waiting at least one day after receiving instruction before testing as this allows time to ensure that all the information from the class was retained.

Rapp Rocks will allow individuals to take the Lead Test on weekday evenings from 4-10pm. Let the front desk staff know upon arriving that you would like to take the Lead Test.

Participants may independently take the Lead Climb Only or Lead Belay Only Tests if they choose. Testing lead belayers will need someone to climb for their test. Climbers need to be already certified to lead climb or simultaneously testing.
